Substance abuse treatment centers exist because there are many people out there with problems to solve. Those problems are too big for one brain, so help is called in or sought out. Sometimes, those problems place the troubled person as a victim of circumstance. Sometimes, it really can be blamed on someone else. But sometimes, those problems are that person’s own fault. It does not matter what caused the problem to start, but it matters that the problem is being fixed. The addicted should not be held at fault for their addiction, but they can be held at fault for not trying to fix it if it needs fixing.
There is such a thing as manageable addictions. One could argue that every animal on this planet is addicted to water and oxygen, but a more reliable connection would be cigarette smokers. Smoking is a very harmful practice, but it is also a strange one. The master writer Kurt Vonnegut smoked Pall Mall cigarettes until the day he died at 85 years of age to massive head injuries after falling down a flight of stairs. In his own words: “[smoking is a] classy way to commit suicide.” So why are there not substance abuse treatment centers for cigarette smokers? It is a substance that can be abused unto death.
The reason may be that it is a manageable addiction, which is an addiction that causes very little harm to ones life. Like reading a book. As long as you do not read while driving, you should be OK. Everyone has the freedom of choice to smoke; they are only restricted as to where they may smoke. The fact that there are no substance abuse treatment centers to help one quit smoking is a large giveaway: if it were a problem, there would be more money put into helping people quit. If a person really wants to quit smoking, they may just succeed. But more often than not, a person thinks that they cannot quit.
We are all human, after all. We are also part of a society that is based on free will, and, unfortunately, hedonistic desires lead some into trouble. Too much can be a bad thing, after all. Substance abuse treatment centers are there to gently bring a person back to Earth, from whatever heights or depths they were previously in. Reality can be a wonderful thing: some of the best aspects enjoyed in reality include nature, humanities innovation, camaraderie, giggling babies and cats doing funny things. Those are only a few things that are best enjoyed sober, in reality.
Substance abuse treatment centers are all over the place. They are as sneaky as prisons and beautiful sunsets in that way: you will not know where they are until you stumble across them. Your local government, health authority or doctor should have plenty of information or help on where to get started. Once again: it is no ones fault that they are addicted; but they can be at fault for not seeking help.
